  9. <p>Formed as 92nd Bombardment Wing at Spokane AFB, WA (later Fairchild AFB) with the B-29 in November 1947, the unit has remained at the base ever since. It was redesignated 92nd Strategic Aerospace Wing in February 1962 but reverted to Bombardment Wing status in March 1972. The unit operated the B-36 between 1951 and 1957 and the B-52 from 1957 until 1994. The wing won the Fairchild Trophy as the top bomber team at SAC's Proud Shield bombing and navigation competition in 1953 and 1986. The unit became the 92nd Wing in October 1991, and changed to the 92nd Air Refueling Wing on 1 July 1994 as the third and final tanker hub wing.
